Light and Darkness Ritual

• 11 cards · 2 Ritual bosses

Chaos Origins rebuilds Yugi's two Chaos Rituals as one engine. Black Luster Soldier - Soldier of Light and Darkness and Magician of Dark Chaos - Black Chaos share one Ritual Spell, and nine support cards find the pieces, recycle them and act on your opponent's turn. This tab reviews every card from its official TCG text, maps how the engine plugs into LIGHT/DARK Chaos cards and classic Ritual Monsters, measures what it can stop, and ends with ratios, three simulator lines and a verdict.

Pick a card for its official text, its job in the deck and what it's weak to. The ratings are our read of each card's value in a focused build, and the copy counts match the list in Ratios.

Every layer of this engine can rebuild another. This section follows the cards around the loop: what comes back from the GY, what pays for a Level 8, and which card finds which, including the classic Black Luster Soldier and Magician of Black Chaos.

Why it grinds: the bosses dodge anything that doesn't target, the Magician shields Mind Shuffle, and the GY refills both. To shut the loop down, your opponent has to hit two of those three layers in the same turn, because whatever they miss rebuilds the rest on your next turn.

"You can Ritual Summon this card with Light and Darkness Ritual" doesn't lock the bosses to that Spell. Any Ritual Spell that covers them works, and the new Black Luster Soldier is a "Black Luster Soldier" Ritual Monster while the Magician is a "Chaos" one.

Next turn, back to step 4. The Ritual refills again, the Magician's Spell add resets, and Skull Archfiend revives itself by putting three GY or banished cards on the bottom of the Deck. Lines 1–3 in the combo simulator play this chart step by step.

The engine wasn't built around the classic "banish 1 LIGHT and 1 DARK" Chaos cost, but both use the same Graveyard. Here's what each side feeds the other, where they compete, and how the engine gets banished cards back. The Chaos page covers the Chaos cards in depth.

Four DARK, one LIGHT, one EARTH. Classic Chaos summons need both Attributes in the GY, and this engine only has Celtic Mystic on the LIGHT side. Treat the Chaos cards as a light splash, not a second engine.

Light and Darkness Ritual banishes Levels from the GY, and Chaos summons banish LIGHT and DARK from the GY: both eat the same pile. Two habits keep that from hurting. Refill first: the Ritual's GY effect should pull Black Chaos or Griffoh out before anything banishes them. Recycle the banished: Chaos costs and the Ritual's GY banishes leave cards face-up in banishment, and Skull Archfiend of Chaos can target face-up banished cards. Three of them go back to the bottom of the Deck when it revives itself, as long as one mentions the Ritual.

What the engine can do on your opponent's turn, how high that goes, and how well it breaks a board going second.

• 0Chaos Origins cards in the engine that say "negate"
• 1Effect change (Chaos Magical Hats)
• 2–3Interactions on a good going-first board
• 3Cards banished going second, from 2 cards

The engine never negates. On your opponent's turn its ceiling is a Mind Shuffle tag-out into Black Luster Soldier's banish, one Set Quick-Play, and the Magician's shield: two or three interactions from a good hand. All of them work around your opponent's effect, or after it, instead of stopping it. That's low for 2026, and it's why most lists add negates from hand traps or a partner engine.

What makes up for it is how hard the board is to remove. The bosses only fall to targeting, Mind Shuffle only falls once the Magician is gone, and the GY only falls to cards like Macro Cosmos or D.D. Crow. Your opponent needs to break at least two of those in one turn, because whatever they miss rebuilds the rest.

Pick a common answer your opponent might use to see how each piece of the engine handles it. Rows marked BETB are the Beyond the Brave cards, legal in the TCG from 8 Oct 2026.

Going second is where the engine is at its best. With Black Chaos + Ragged Records of Rites (Line 3 below), Black Luster Soldier banishes 1 card when it's Ritual Summoned. The Magician you Tributed is then the shuffle cost for Black Chaos, which banishes 2 more without targeting. After that, 6000 damage goes into an empty field.

Three two-card lines: the standard board going first, what that board does on your opponent's turn, and a going-second break. Each one plays step by step in the combo simulator below the tabs.

These are our starting ratios, not a sourced list. Public deck recipes on Konami's database show two shapes: a focused 40-card build, and a 45-card hybrid with Mitsurugi. This is the focused one; the packages below show what to swap for each direction. The Beyond the Brave tab shows what changes once Spell Shattering Sword and Black Skull Dragon arrive.

Contender engine, best as the core of a hybrid High floor, deep grind game, strong going second, no negation of its own

• ConsistencyNine one-card starters in 40, and every one reaches the same board.
• Grind gameThe refill, Skull Archfiend and the Magician rebuild a board every turn.
• Going secondThree banishes from two cards, two of them without targeting.
• Board resilienceBreaking it takes targeting, GY hate or a floodgate, ideally two at once.
• Hand-trap resistanceBlack Chaos and Griffoh dodge Ash, but the core line still has three Ash targets.
• Negation ceilingNothing in the Chaos Origins engine negates. Beyond the Brave's Spell Shattering Sword is the first card that does.

Light and Darkness Ritual is a high-floor engine with a low ceiling on negation. It makes the same board from most hands, it rebuilds that board every turn, and its bosses shrug off the non-targeting removal most decks rely on. What it can't do is stop your opponent's combo outright: its going-first interaction is a tag-out, a banish and a Set Quick-Play.

Community reports from the first months of the TCG format point the same way. Pure builds are seen as the weaker version, the engine does its best work as the core of a hybrid, and its going-second game is its strongest selling point.

Our verdict: play the engine, not the pure deck. Fourteen to sixteen cards buy you a consistent boss, a trap-speed tag-out and a grind engine that refills every turn. Spend the rest of the deck on the negates it can't make.

• Ash Blossom on the first add

Mind Shuffle's add, Skull Archfiend's send and Ragged Records all touch the Deck. Lead with the one you can afford to lose. With Records and Black Chaos, Records is the bait.

• Ghost Ogre before the Magician lands

Ogre can destroy Mind Shuffle whenever one of its effects activates, and only the Magician stops that. Black Chaos can place it again from the GY, but that costs your starter.

• The GY is the engine

Macro Cosmos shuts off the refill, Skull Archfiend's GY trigger, Ragged Records' return and Black Chaos's protection. Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion negates the refill and Skull Archfiend's revive from the GY. D.D. Crow on the only Ritual Spell in your GY switches Black Chaos's protection off.

• Kaiju and Lava Golem

Tributing for a summon isn't an effect, so the bosses' protection doesn't apply and Mind Shuffle has nothing to respond to. The upside: the Kaiju or Golem is now a Level 8 on your field, ready to Tribute for your Ritual.

• Bricks

A boss, a second boss and the Ritual Spell with no Tribute is a dead hand. That's why the list runs one of each boss and leans on starters that find them.

• 2 cards for this engine

The Strategic Breakdown's biggest complaint is that nothing in this engine negates. Beyond the Brave answers it with two cards that work as a pair. Spell Shattering Sword is a Light and Darkness Quick-Play that zeroes and negates a face-up monster. Black Skull Dragon, the Archfiend of Unity is a Level 9 the engine can find, summon at Quick-Effect speed and use for Mind Shuffle, and it Sets the Sword every time it's Special Summoned.

Legal in the TCG from 8 Oct 2026. The threat checker in the Strategic Breakdown tab now shows how both cards handle ten common answers. Open the checker.

Its two modes answer different decks, its float rewards Chaos Magical Hats, and the way it reaches the field decides when you can use it.

Griffoh's Set and the Sword can't both answer the same activation. By the time Griffoh's effect resolves and the Sword is Set, the chain you responded to is already resolving. So use Griffoh early, at the start of your opponent's turn or in response to their first, least important play, and keep the Sword for the effect that matters. Going second there's no such problem: Set it and activate it in your own Main Phase.

Mode 1 is a side-deck effect you get in the Main Deck. Against Field Spells, Continuous Spell engines and Pendulum Scales it destroys every face-up Spell your opponent controls, with no target. It's still destruction, so cards that can't be destroyed stay.

Three lines with the new cards. They play in the same combo simulator as Lines 1–3, below the tabs.
